Antony and the Johnsons s'organise autour du chanteur Antony Hegarty. Cet anglais, né en 1971 à Chichester dans le sud de l'Angleterre, s'installe, en 1981, aux Etats-Unis. Fan de Marc Almond et de Boy George, le chanteur fonde avec Johanna Constantine en 1990, un collectif artistique, Blacklips, composé de drag queens qui s'adonnent au théâtre expérimental. Ce dernier est découvert par le musicien David Tibet, membre fondateur du groupe de musique expérimentale Current 93.
La formation sort, en 2000, un premier album éponyme. Suit, en 2001, un maxi, intitulé "I Fell In Love With A Dead Boy". Le groupe a visiblement de la chance puisqu'il se fait remarquer par Lou Reed pour travailler pour son projet The Raven. Cette opportunité permet au groupe de signer chez Secretly Canadian, un label américain. En 2004, Antony and the Johnsons sort un maxi intitulé "The Lake". Le groupe sort un second album, "I Am A Bird Now", en 2005. Après "The Crying Light", il est de retour cinq ans plus tard avec "Swanlights".
